What Makes Welding Fumes So Hazardous?
When metal is heated to its boiling point during welding, it releases a complex mix of metallic oxides and toxic gases. These particles are often smaller than 1 micron. That makes them fine enough to bypass the body’s natural defences and penetrate deep into the lungs. Long term exposure is linked to lung cancer, manganism, which is a Parkinson’s like neurological disorder, and chronic respiratory disease.
Standard N95 or surgical masks offer no meaningful protection for sustained welding work. They cannot filter the finest particles, provide no gas protection, and fail to seal properly, especially in Thailand’s heat and humidity, where sweat breaks down the fit within minutes.
The 3M Speedglas Solution
The 3M Speedglas welding helmet range, combined with the 3M Adflo Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR), is the gold standard for welding respiratory protection. Instead of relying on the welder’s breathing effort, the Adflo actively pumps filtered air into the helmet. This creates positive pressure that prevents any unfiltered air from entering, regardless of face shape or facial hair.
